WHAT COULD BE

Too often, people feel an urge to reconstruct, melt, and mold into the world’s graciously accepted definition of normal. We fray away from the dangerous uncertainties that come with standing apart, or worse, standing alone. Life becomes a black and white hologram of what could have been. With my art, I hope to help begin a new normal: The frightening uncharted normal of standing alone together.

FOR A FIGURE SKATER

The day I sought to remember

My heart paused to flutter

As I dreamt of what would be

If I was still you

And you were still me

My beautiful white blades

That left me to starve,

Hating myself and cutting my arms

Until there was just a girl

Too broken to be strong

Who stood beside the willow's bark

And hung herself before dawn

My beautiful white blades

You, my lustful master

I, your loving slave
